Celebrated every Memorial Day weekend is the traditional Leech Lake Veterans Memorial Pow Wow held at the Veterans Memorial Grounds. Native dancers and drum groups from throughout the Upper Midwest, northern Great Plains and Canada will be here to celebrate. Events start each day with flag-raising at 10:00 a.m. Grand entry of dancers is 7:00 p.m. Friday, 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. Saturday, and 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

Established as a bronze level bicycle friendly community in 2012, Bemidji offers a wide assortment of trails. Right outside most hotels there are plenty of places to rent bikes so you don’t have to own one to enjoy the trails. Bemidji is the perfect place to get out, feel the wind in your hair, see some of nature at its finest and get a little exercise in too!

We have trails to accommodate every type of rider.

  • The most popular trail to ride in Bemidji is the “Loop the Lake” trail that goes all the way around Lake Bemidji. This is an excellent family trail with places to eat, play and plenty of photo ops. Not to mention, it will give you a fun practice session for the Loop the Lake Festival ride on June 15th!
  • Bemidji is home to the trailhead of the 115-mile long paved Paul Bunyan State Trail.
  • Lake Bemidji State Park offers several miles of bike trails.
  • Movil Maze is fun area for those of you that like a little tougher terrain.
  • Bike through downtown Bemidji and enjoy lunch and some shopping.

National Bike Month was established in 1956 to help showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage others to try. What better way to celebrate then by planning a stay in Bemidji to get a feel for all kinds of bicycling.

One of only 3 cities in Minnesota to earn the Audubon designation “Bird City,” Bemidji is an excellent place to plan a bird watching trip any time of year. Bird Day is the oldest of the days set aside to recognize birds. According to the U.S. Library of Congress, Bird Day was first observed on May 4, 1894. Founded by Charles Almanzo Babcock, by 1910, Bird Day was widely celebrated, often in conjunction with Arbor Day.

World Migratory Bird Day celebrates the incredible journey that migratory birds take each year. They travel thousands of miles between breeding grounds in North America, and their winter homes in Central and South America.
