ITASCA STATE PARK

Learn about the ‘boys’ that built Forest Inn, Old Timer’s Cabin and more. Learn about the 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) on this walking tour of buildings around the Douglas Lodge area, ending at the CCC Old Timer’s Cabin, only 4 (massive) logs tall. The Naturalist staff will have the cabin open for you to tour at your leisure.

OJIBWE KAHOOT COMPETITION!

LAKE BEMIDJI STATE PARK 5:00 pm to 5:30 pm

Learn a selection of Ojibwe words related to things that can be found in the park; then, test out your new language learning by playing a competetive Kahoot. Winners receive bragging rights and a prize! This recurring program will have a new theme each time. No prior knowledge of the Ojibwe language is required. An electronic device capable of connecting to Wi-Fi is required for this activity.

Get a feel for the early 1900s community of Lake Itasca at the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers Showground (LIRPF). See the Itasca Historic Sawmill, explore various buildings including a country school, dove-tail one-room log house and a logging museum.

Witness the greatest campfire cook-off to hit the Minnesota State Parks and Trails system: the Cast Iron Chef cookoff! Our August campground hosts face-off against former park naturalist, John Fylppa, in a winner-take-all cooking competition! You be the judge. Participants will use various cast iron cooking techniques to create campfire dishes that will have you drooling; learn how to make them yourself for your next camping trip!

DRAGONFLIES CAR TOUR: MN’S TREASURES SNA SPECIALITY TOUR

This car tour will start off with a quick lesson about the life cycle of dragonflies. After, we will drive to the Wilderness Sanctuary SNA in search of dragonflies. We will use nets to capture and study dragonflies that are attracted to the old growth pine forest.

Founded by the Professional Disc Golf Association in 2016, to celebrate a currently fast growing sport that originated in the 1960s. People of all ages and abilities play disc golf. Played with a disc or “Frisbee” it’s a great low-impact, cardiovascular workout that can test both physical skill and mental determination, and brings the whole family together for an afternoon of laughs and enjoyment together. Grab a disc or two and head to a local disc golf course! (Bonus: most courses are FREE!!)
