What a winter so far! We’ve got lots of snow here in the Bemidji area and it has created a mess on area lakes! Lots of slush under the snow on top of the ice and it has made getting around very difficult. Vehicle traffic on area lakes is pretty much nonexistent and Lake Bemidji is like a ghost town because folks can’t get their fish houses out on the lake.
You can still get on the lakes but your best bet is using snowshoes and pulling the portables and gear out with you. We’ve been getting some nice crappies along with a few walleyes. The benefit of this winter is the limited amount of people out on the lakes. Most winters the fish are not hitting hard, which should in turn make for some great open water fishing! If your heading out on area lakes just know your going to run into some tough conditions but it can be worth your while. Have a great day on the ice and please remember to practice selective harvesting, by doing so we will continue to have great fishing for years to come!
