Watermark Art Center Exhibit Reception and Participatory Demonstration

Watermark Art Center opens a compelling new body of work by Monica Ihrke on August 7 with a reception from 5 to 7pm and artist talk at 5:30.

Ihrke’s exhibit “INVASIVE: a study of invasive plants in Minnesota”, is a series of linocut prints that brings the often-overlooked presence of non-native plants into sharp focus. Based in Duluth, Minnesota, Ihrke utilizes the distinct textures and bold lines of relief-printed linoleum to explore the intersection of the natural and the industrial, often highlighting spaces deemed both beloved and vulnerable.

This latest project delves into the pervasive issue of invasive plant species within the local ecosystem, beginning with those found closest to home – in Ihrke’s own backyard and neighborhood. Through her evocative prints, Ihrke aims to cultivate public awareness and recognition of these species, ultimately encouraging viewers to actively engage in their removal and replacement with native plants.

Ihrke’s goal is to familiarize people with the local invasive plants in their backyard. During the Saturday gathering, participants will hear about her process, learn about invasive plants, and be given the opportunity to try printmaking themselves. Ihrke is a Duluth-based artist who sets out to capture with ink on paper the invasive plants closest to her. She uses relief-printed linoleum to depict beloved and vulnerable natural and industrial spaces. There is no charge or registration required to attend the demo, however, space may be limited.

Ihrke is a recipient of the 2025 Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, and this activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
