Minnesota's Scenic Byways

"While not all roads lead to Bemidji, many do.  And many of them are Scenic Byways - roads designated by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation "representing the depth and breadth of scenery in America--natural and man-made panoramas; electrifying neon landscapes; ancient and modern history coming alive; native arts and culture; and scenes of friends, families and strangers sharing their stories."  America's Byways
The first section of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway begins in the Bemidji area at Itasca State Park. Edge of the Wildnerness, Ladyslipper, Avenue of the Pines and Lake County Scenic Byways offer historic sites, parks, trails and much more to explore and discover the life of northern Minnesota.
Great River Road National Scenic Byway

The Mississippi begins humbly at Itasca State Park as a narrow stream flowing through a neat line of water smoothed stones. Flowing north to Bemidji, the river gradually widens, curving like a question mark into the middle of the state.
The Minnesota section of the Great River Road runs 575 miles beside the legendary Mississippi River.  The Byway follows the waterway from the start to the finish, with Minnesota's stretch presenting a thorough sampling of the state.
You will spot migrating birds at any of 100 sites along the Great River Birding Trail, an Audubon Society developed route that also follows the river.
